Telomere caps

Human chromosomes (grey) capped by telomeres (white)

Telomeres cap the end of chromosomes to protect them in cell division. The cells divide and every time part of the chromosomes is lost however telomeres cap the end of the chromosomes so that the chromosome cannot me taken off. Once the telomeres are completely worn down the cell can no longer divide and this marks the end of life.
